An interesting read….
The other day I saw an article in the Gainesville times. The headlines stated that City Manager remarks that city finances are doing well. What that article does not say is that it is no thanks to him. You see, that coucil used to have some very conscience people on it who demanded smaller government and less spending. Those people have since gone from the council. It seemed that their understanding of business and demands for budget constraints have led to this current jump in the city finances. However, since they are now gone, this situation will surely be short lived. Some, not all, of the other members of the council now serving do not share the same thoughts on less spending and less government (nor any proper business judgement or logical thought). Lets take the Mayor’s recent address for example. (Chocked full of spending initiatives). Like spending money to combine city worker facilities by spending $18,000 on useless gravel for truck parking, spending the $30,000 put in the stormwater fund on a study to “start the process” of making a stormwater plan (how much will that eventually cost for a piece of paper), and let’s not forget his positive vote to spend 20, 000 on a plan to get a grant of 400,000 from the federal government to write another plan, that is $420,000 in total (hope he gets a lot of paper for that price tag). And on he goes with the spending, all I have to say is that we will wake up soon enough with more pay raises for city workers, higher pay in the form of per diems for council members, wasted money on consultants and other usless items. This will lead to either higher sewer rates so that we can make that sewer fund flush with cash to lend to the operation of our over priced city, tax increases by raising the milledge, or not fully rolling back the taxes when LOST dollars increase, and or borrowing “from ourselves” or from outside sources. If this seems a difficult thing to understand then good it means you are still paying attention. Suffice it to say the best thing they could do is cut spending and lower taxes, or just give the tax money back to taxpayers that they are overcharging. However they will not. It will get spent and not 100% on things we need like new roads that will bring businesses and new jobs to the area. Some will go to the roads and stormwater but not all of it like what should happen. No, many dollars will be frittered off to usless projects, pay raises for some who do not need them, greater creature comforts for elected officials in the forms of stuff or additional pay, or just generally wasted.
It bothers me that so many do not see what is going on or are taken in by people that they think they can trust. Maybe this message will wake a few people up. Maybe it will just offend some, hopefully they will not dismiss this as conspiracy or foolishness. For you see it is truer than you know just wait and see.
