Ever since the announcement of a special election to replace two Flowery Branch council members and my announcement that I will/will not run, I have wanted to write about the people that have been rumored to be in the running for one of the two positions. I was thinking at the time that Rumour would be the title of the article (like the Fleetwood Mac album), but I just couldn’t get past the song “Don’t Stop” because it was used in the Clinton campaign… the Bill Clinton campaign. Then it kind of dawned on me that this article probably could have a song title from the Rumour album since the candidates are much like the songs: “Second Hand News”, “Dreams”, “Never Going Back Again”, “Go Your Own Way”, “I Don’t Want to Know”, and “Oh Daddy”.
“Second Hand News”: while at the 9th District GOP convention, I struck up a conversation with one of the delegates who told me that she was encouraging Alan Davenport, owner of Growlers on Main to run for one of the positions. There has been at least one run in between the city and the business and I would assume that he is going to run to try to make the city more business friendly to everyone (not just who they appear to like).
“Dreams”: this one is for Ed Edwards. He will be making his second attempt for election to the council. While I don’t think he has announced, I have seen him at political events and council meetings. It appears that he is in the race. Let’s hope that he learns from his past experience and spends less time talking about his ex wife and more time talking about what his plans are for the city.
“Never Going Back Again”: It is common to wonder when a person loses a race if they want a second shot. I checked with Amanda Swafford, former city council member that came up short against Dr. Gibbs the last time. Dr. Gibbs recently resigned due to being relocated. In her best Libertarian way, she told me no when asked if she was going to make another run.
“Go Your Own Way”: that would have to be me. While I have had several people ask me to run, I have had just as many (maybe more) ask me not to. The reasons vary, but a lot of them want me to save myself for something else and they think that Flowery Branch is beyond saving. I am currently undecided, but leaning, maybe falling, against not running.
“I Don’t Want to Know”: this would be assigned to the only person that I know that has announced, but hasn’t seemed to engage: Michael Justice. I went to the last council meeting just to see if I could talk to him, but I didn’t see him there (and it isn’t a big room). It was announced at the last South Hall GOP club that he is running, but I had to leave before I could introduce myself.
“Oh Daddy”: this one is for Chris Fetterman who appears to be getting splinters while sitting on the fence. I know he has been asked to run by several people and I know that he is thinking about it. But the last time I talked to him, he talked about his son’s baseball, work, and other stuff. So for now, splinters it is.
A good album requires some good songs. As it stands, I think we have two candidates in, two thinking about it and two that don’t want any part of it. Now, believe me, I was tempted to add a “Gold Dust Woman” to the mix, but I was afraid that my wife would read this and remand me to sleeping on the couch. For this race to equal the greatness of the Rumour album, then we would need some competition. Stay tuned….
